Dear Ruth,
My field trip was to the crabapple tree by the fence, and it got a haircut. 7 trees done, 8 to go. At the rate I am going, I think I will be done with spring chores by next November.
The photos I tried again today of the moss in the doormat didn't come out. I will have to clamp it to a board and get it verticle so I can use the tripod, because putting it on the back of the chair and fudging without the tripod didn't work--- Gracie thought I had put the mat there for her; she tried to show me that it didn't belong there by purring very loudly and whipping her tail back and forth while rubbing her back under the camera. Auto-focus is no match for Gracie.
I learned something about moss. When the day is as dry and windy as today was, and a bit chilly too, the moss goes into hiding. I will wait till after the next rainy day, and try again. This shoot is turning into a big production. I'm not sure anyone will be interested in looking at a doormat growing moss, but it looked mighty green yesterday, blending nicely with all the blooming moss growing on the bricks.
I've been on a search for green the last week or so, and so far have turned up a variety of lichen as well as the moss. If you get really close to either group, all you see is green. It is a nice visual to have during mud season. And the neat thing is, they are sporing. There are tiny green granules everywhere, like miniature bb's.. I do believe they get shot into the air. No wonder people have allergy problems. Those things can shoot your eye out.
