Dear Mom,
Yesterday I ordered 1,000 worms to start vermicomposting. YAY! Then today I got an email saying it was an especially busy spring in the worming world (thanks a lot, martha stewart, for doing a segment on them) and they were running low on worms. Thanks to the run on worms, I have to wait up to two weeks for my beebos.

Dear Ruth,

I love those moss/lichen shots. Had to laugh at the second one, because what's with wrong-way-Joe in the second one? Everyone's periscopes pointing forward, and there's old Joe, watching the retreat.

The standing lichen with the red/orange is outstanding. I love these shots!!!

Vermiculture is a perfect fit for someone who fell in love with worms when she was two. I don't think there are many animals in the world whose poops are so beloved.

Was it Martha who jogged your memory on this or just something you've wanted to start for awhile? I've been thinking about doing it for years, every time I run across the vermiculture containers in the garden catalogs. Very tempting...

So lead on! I have a feeling that lone periscope belongs to you, and the others are the ones looking backward. La-la-laaaaa!

Dear Mom,
hahaha, I get it. I had wanted to say poo about having to wait, but I thought that might fall flat. get it? worm poo.

I thought that shot of the moss spores looked like lots of people commuting, all going down the escalator, except for joe, who's going up.

Ruth

Dear Mom,
Well, I decided to do it because Martha made it look so easy and cheap. You just use a rubbermaid tub. I guess she made it look easy for everybody. And her whole audience got the book that we bought when we were researching it; was I in 8th grade?

Dear Ruth,

I can't remember when we got that book, but I still have it. Isn't it called something like " Worms Eat My Garbage" ? Want me to send it to you, or do the worms come with instructions and there's enough info on the web? I may have to borrow it back at some point, tho I guess I could read it first and then send it.

Today was a crazy day, with hours spent dealing with the chipper/shredder's broken belt ( finding replacement).

I ran errands---MY LENS CAME BACK AT RITZ!!!!! and I stopped to buy seeds at the Garden Barn and for the first time ever I drove up just as they were putting out the rainy day flag, which meant 20% off your entire purchase, so I bought more than just seeds! (There's a sucker in every crowd). But I was so thrilled to finally be there on one of their rainy day sales I couldn't resist. Wahoo.

On the tub for vermiculture--- can't Ron install a little spigot down near the bottom to use as a drain? Eventually there is moisture draining off, right?

I think worm poo is a new shampoo for birds.

Dear Ruth

P.S. I got soaked shopping in the rain. But it was worth it.

Dear Mom,
you can keep the book--I have one coming with the worms. They say they have lots of worm babies, so I may get you started if I can keep mine alive. For drainage, you drill holes in the rubbermaid, all the way around, even the bottom. You put a couple pieces of 2x4 to raise it up off the ground, and we bought another storage unit that's slightly bigger all around but shallow to use as a catch basin for their "tea".
