Dear Mom,
See? I was doing other things than playing Wii all weekend. I finished sewing this top, the one that I needed to get ribbon for at Michael's. (It ties in the back.) I found this rad material on clearance at Joann for 3.00 a yard, which was all they had left. One yard. My pattern called for more, but I figured out a way to seam the back so I could squeeze a while shirt out without so much a a scrap left over. (More or less.) I was thinking about how you told me once that you never ended up using the pattern layouts as they recommend because that way you can get more use out of your material. And over the weekend I hemmed the pants I'm wearing in this picture, which had been hanging around with the tags on for the last two years. YAY for new pants. And I also took up the straps on a black knit dress from Old Navy which was designed for some sort of Amazon girl. The seam is a little wonky because the material kept eluding my pressure foot, so I'm thinking about sewing down cool ribbon or maybe embroidering something at the top of the shoulders to camoflage.

Love,
Ruth
p.s. I also designed those new earrings.

Dear Ruth,

I just caught myself leaning to the side of the computer screen thinking I could get a better look at those earrings! They look like circles with a section out? Like wishbones. You'll have to send a close-up, but from this vantage point, I like them.

I think this picture is the equivalent of sitting down to a meal where everything--- milk, meat, veggies, fruit and bread--- is something you grew, nurtured or made from scratch. The top looks wonderful !! and those are cool pants to have been waiting in the wings for so long.

Granny Bea would be proud. She survived the depression with exactly those frugal ways of making the most of everything. And it would always give her a feeling of great accomplishment to be able to layout a pattern better than the instructions. Glad you remembered that. Everyone will think the seam was meant to be down the back. All those leftover scraps of mother's fit in the smallest cloth bag---her scrap bag--- hardly enough in there to piece a quilt, but the bag moved with us all those years. I have that bag, now empty ( I transferred the scraps to other places long ago). I will send it to you. Sounds like your first entry will be the blouse scraps which won't take up any room at all, which is good, because it is a small bag.

I'd say you have passed the wii addiction test with flying colors. Hope the arms are back to normal.

Yes on the embroidery on the black knit. Embellishments rule.

Beautiful day. Cathy W is coming over. Our new lawn tractor, the Cub Cadet, is being delivered in a couple of hours, so if we work it right, the lawn will be mowed for the company. Dad promised not to start with the fields first.

I'm off to put compost on the tomatoes prior to mulching them with hay and putting up the cages. It is much easier to put the cages up after the hay is down...

I had a happy fit walking back to the pump from the garden yesterday, under the canopy of trees, with the rhodies blooming in the tucked in places, the wild bouncing bet blooming by the pump, and various other plants filling out their spots. The cats tagging along, interested--- it was so beautiful. I love this property!

And I love you. You are a happy fit too.

ps granny bea just reminded me to tell you not to throw out your veggie water, if you have any. Pop those drainings into a container, save in the freezer, and add to your soup stock whenever. Adds depth to any broth.
