New project started. This time, as a treat, I ordered the actual yarn called for, during a weak moment during a late night in the office. It's for the vest, and the color is slightly darker (by mistake) than the one in the picture. But it's still nice, such a warm caramel color. (Since it was a vulnerable fiber moment, I also ordered the two balls needed for the obi. That way I can keep my kidneys warm.)

The dress only needs its straps. Ron was suspicious that I was starting something new, but 1. the dress will be done soon, 2. It is big and unwieldy, and 3. I need something car-appropriate for next weekend.
Compared to the hardy Wool of the Andes the dress is knit in, the alpaca is so soft and sweet.

Dear Ruth,
I remember you showing me that pattern. I fully understand the splurge/work connection. I ordered several books after cleaning out the freezers. Getting them was better than going out to eat! One of them was Garrison Keilor's new book Pontoon, and I'm on my way up to read it in bed now.
On the ribbing---looks textural. Are you knitting into the back of a knit stitch to get that effect, or doing some kind of seed stitch? I love how knitting into the back of a stitch looks when done on Aran sweater ribs, and I love how your stitches look here. Are you working on the back first, so that center bit of ribbing goes up the center of the back? I think it looks yummy, color and all. You'll get it knitted up in no time.

Dear Mom,
Yes, that is the back, and the ribbing goes up the center. That texture is just from the way the yarn is plyed; there's just regular knitting and purling.
Love,
Ruth
Dear Ruth,
Even your regular knitting and purling look special.
