Dear Mom,
There has been lots of work happening on the Fauxmestead this weekend. On Saturday we drove down to Murfreesboro to meet with Bo, a guys with a small lumber mill who had some cedar advertised on craiglist. It was also the gallery crawl night, so we had an evening out on the town and dinner with friends afterward.

Then yesterday, Sunday, it was the most beautiful day ever born, so we got to work. What do you do with a bunch of cedar?

And a handy husband?

You get garden beds.

More developments should happen shortly, although now that we're back to the rainy cold doldrums (and the work week) it will probably slow down a little.
Last year around this time we were still having blizzards, and today I have a tan.

Love,
Ruth

Dear Ruth,

What a beautiful raised bed! Ron is soooooo capable. You are a very lucky woman.

You will be amazed at the difference between raised bed culture and rows. You will get lots of produce from a 4'x8' space. My first one blew me away with how much it would hold. There is no wasted space. The fauxmestead owners will eat well.

I wish my 3 beds looked as purty as yours. Warped plastic fake wood can't compare. It offends me to look at them, especially as they sag outwards, but I am trying to pull a Johanna, and think of them as.....what? Petrified wood, maybe. Very hard to come up with something to pretend them to be. They are better during late season, when all the edge plants have heaved overboard and you can't see the plastic boards at all.

What a beautiful bed you have to begin raised horticulture in! That Ron is one cool and capable guy.

Today is stormy, with big lightening and thunder coming our way. I've been trying to get ready for the Easter Hunt, all the while hoping the weather will be good for Sunday, since I don't have a plan B. Even plan A is a bit rusty yet. I'm having to tap into old brain cells of the long ago and forgotten. I used to be able to make a hunt out of barely anything. (Newspapers cut into arrows... ) so far I've come up with slips of paper stuffed into plastic eggs that say" go hug somebody you love!", and " sing a song outloud!". I figure it will make the hunt last longer, since there is reading involved. And decisions to make on who to hug, and what to sing. There will also be prizes in the garden, and a slip of paper in the eggs telling you to go get a prize.

Glad all is well at your place. What are your Easter plans? If by any chance you are going to be up our way, give me a head's up, as I'm making dishes with dairy. I can alter. That would be a great beginning to Plan B!!

Dear Mom,
Hey, now, I need a little credit too. Not only did I do all the research, find the supplies, call Bo, buy the supplies, I helped build them too. And you know who's going to do all the actual gardening...

I think the plan for the Easter egg hunt sounds like fun. I always liked the adventure to last as long as possible. I'm sad I won't be there. I have my talk to give at the gallery on Thursday night, and so much to get done in the studio. I think we'll get together with some art dept friends for a meal on Easter, just so that it doesn't feel like every regular Sunday: just workin' workin' workin'. And we need to get stuff planted in those gardens!

Love,
Ruth

Dear Ruth,

I just now saw this reply, so will answer late rather than never...

Since you didn't toot your own horn a bit, I only saw the obvious-- handy husband, and then voila! raised beds.

What's the matter with me? I should be able to recognize all the "behind the scenes " stuff in a snap, since I've done so much of that myself in the last 43+ years. So here's to all your great organizational and preparatory work, and I am expecting the garden maven to pop out as soon as the seeds are up. And no doubt about it, the maven will have your name.
